THINGS TO DO

VISIT THE WALLABIES
Waimate is one of the only places in New Zealand that you will find Wallabies (Bennett's Wallaby) in the wild. These marsupials were introduced from Australia and now live wild in the countryside surrounding the town . You can however see them up close in a enclosure at Victoria Park or go one step further and visit and even feed them at the local Wallaby Park called enkledoovery-korna.
LOCAL WALKS
Waimate is blessed with a variety of bush walks. Kelceys bush and Studholme bush are the most popular or even take a walk up to the White Horse Monument to get expansive views over the township.
THE WHITE HORSE MONUMENT
Take the car or use the walkway to reach this lookout for panoramic views of Waimate and its surrounds. The monument (white horse) is 60 feet high and 48 feet long. It was built in commemoration of the work done by the Clydesdales in the agricultural development of Waimate. The monument was the inspiration of Mr Norman Hayman and modelled on the Whitehorse of England. WAIMATE SILO ART
Waimate is home to one of New Zealand’s largest pieces of street art, on the landmark Waimate Grain Silos. Two good mates - Barry Sadler, of Transport Waimate Ltd, which owns the silos, and Waimate artist Bill Scott collaborated on the project to decorate the silos with murals celebrating the town’s past.
